Standing Desk Height Chart and Formula by Body Height

Use a standing desk height chart in cm and inches, see the elbow-height formula, and adjust the surface for your keyboard, shoes and standing mat.

A standing desk height chart helps you compare a desk’s travel range with a starting estimate for your body height. The final setting comes from your relaxed elbow height and the keyboard you use. This page explains the formula, the table and the corrections for footwear and mats.

The desk-height measurement guide covers seated height and fixed desks. Use the ergonomic desk setup checklist to confirm the rest of your workstation after setting the surface.

Standing Desk Height Formula

The most useful formula uses a measurement:

Standing desktop height = measured standing elbow height − keyboard home-row height above the desktop.

Stand in your usual working position, relax your shoulders, and bend your elbows until your forearms are approximately horizontal. Measure from the floor to elbow level. Then measure from the desk surface to the keyboard’s home row. Subtract the second measurement from the first to find a starting desktop setting.

For example, a measured elbow height of 112 cm and a keyboard height of 3 cm give a 109 cm desktop. The arithmetic is exact for those inputs; deciding whether the resulting posture fits you still requires a check at the desk.

OSHA’s working-position guidance describes the aim through posture: relaxed shoulders, upper arms near the torso and straight wrists. It does not prescribe a universal percentage of body height.

Standing Desk Height Chart by Body Height

When an elbow measurement is unavailable, this site’s illustrative planning model uses standing elbow height = 0.63 × body height. The table subtracts a hypothetical 3 cm keyboard. The ratio is an estimate used here, not an OSHA requirement or a measurement of your body.

Body heightEstimated elbow heightEstimated desktop with 3 cm keyboard
5’0” (152 cm)95.8 cm92.8 cm (36.5 in)
5’2” (157 cm)98.9 cm95.9 cm (37.8 in)
5’4” (163 cm)102.7 cm99.7 cm (39.2 in)
5’6” (168 cm)105.8 cm102.8 cm (40.5 in)
5’8” (173 cm)109.0 cm106.0 cm (41.7 in)
5’10” (178 cm)112.1 cm109.1 cm (43.0 in)
6’0” (183 cm)115.3 cm112.3 cm (44.2 in)
6’2” (188 cm)118.4 cm115.4 cm (45.4 in)
6’4” (193 cm)121.6 cm118.6 cm (46.7 in)

Values use the centimetre stature column and are rounded independently. Body proportions vary. The Ergotron planning worksheet likewise cautions that stature-based estimates need individual adjustment; it is not the source of this table’s 0.63 assumption.

An estimate should help shortlist a suitable adjustment range. It should not persuade you to hold an uncomfortable posture to match a row. When your direct elbow measurement differs from the model, use the measurement and verify wrist alignment.

Keyboard Thickness Changes the Surface Height

Measure the keyboard in the configuration you actually use, including any tenting, rear feet or pad beneath it. Do not assume every “standard” keyboard has the same thickness.

These examples all use a measured 112 cm elbow height:

Hypothetical home-row heightStarting desktop height
1.5 cm110.5 cm
3 cm109 cm
4 cm108 cm

The examples show why two people using different keyboards can choose different desk settings despite identical elbow measurements. Their hand level is the same; the surfaces supporting their keyboards are not.

A keyboard tray adds another adjustable surface. Measure to the tray supporting the keyboard instead of treating the main desktop as the typing level. Keep the mouse within easy reach on the same working plane.

Shoes and Anti-Fatigue Mats

Measure in the footwear and on the mat you intend to use. That includes their effect in the floor-to-elbow measurement, so do not add their thickness a second time.

If you start from a barefoot estimate, the effective height under your feet changes the result. A hypothetical 2 cm rise beneath your feet would raise the starting desktop setting by 2 cm, assuming the same posture. A compressible mat may not retain its unloaded thickness under a person, making direct measurement the clearer approach.

If you regularly change shoes, save separate settings or recheck the surface after the change. A memory preset is a convenience, not a substitute for noticing that the keys have become too high or too low.

Monitor Height Needs Its Own Check

Set the screen after you set the keyboard. Raising the desk does not guarantee that the screen’s position relative to your eyes remains comfortable.

Keep your main display in front of you and start with its top at or below eye level. Adjust text size and screen position so reading does not require leaning forward or tipping the head back. The monitor placement summary connects those checks with glare control.

For sustained laptop use, the screen and keyboard cannot be positioned independently while they remain attached. An external keyboard and mouse allow the laptop display to move without raising your hands with it.

Check the Desk’s Minimum and Maximum

Read the exact frame configuration and whether the published height includes the desktop. Add top thickness only when the specification is for a bare frame. Casters and alternative feet may change the finished height too.

Check the seated minimum as well as the standing maximum. A desk that reaches your standing target can still remain too high for seated typing. Use the chair-height guide to establish the seated reference, then compare both measurements with the product’s range.

The layout-first standing desk guide covers room and furniture fit. If the existing desk is the constraint, budget ergonomics explains the order for considering inexpensive adjustments.

Save and Verify the Settings

  1. Set the chair and record the seated typing-surface height.
  2. Stand in your usual shoes and on your usual mat.
  3. Measure relaxed elbow height and subtract keyboard height.
  4. Adjust the desk, then check that shoulders stay relaxed while typing and using the mouse.
  5. Set the screen independently.
  6. Check cables and nearby furniture through the desk’s travel.
  7. Save a standing preset once the whole arrangement works.

Change position during the day. A height chart does not specify how long you should stand. StandDeskReview’s standing-session guide covers that separate question.

FAQ

What standing desk height suits a 5’10” person?

The illustrative table gives about 109 cm (43 inches) for a 178 cm person using a hypothetical 3 cm keyboard. Measure your own elbow height before treating that number as a desk setting.

Does the chart work with a laptop?

It estimates a typing surface. It cannot independently position an attached laptop screen. For sustained work, consider a separate keyboard and mouse so the screen can be raised on its own.

Should I measure to the desktop or the keyboard?

The body reference is elbow level, and the hands reach the keys above the surface. Subtract the keyboard’s home-row height to translate that reference into a desktop setting.

Why does my measured height disagree with the table?

The table assumes body proportions and keyboard thickness. Your proportions, posture and equipment can differ. Use direct measurement and a comfortable working-position check.

Where can I enter measurements interactively?

The desk height calculator at ErgoRanker provides interactive estimates. Return to the chart and measurement method here to understand their limits and verify the result.
